The new Ferdinandeum presents itself simple but powerful. Almost sculptural, as if hewn from a lightly coloured stone, the new fitting piece blends naturally into the detached structure of the Tyrolean state museum. The extension, cast in concrete, takes up the structure of the symmetrical building and reproduces the horizontal division of the existing classical facades in a subtle, abstract form.
The natural stone walls and cornices are taken up in the new facades and implemented by discreetly sharpened and pointed concrete surfaces, in exciting alternation with smooth elements. The exterior appearance is complemented by individual glass surfaces framed with slender steel profiles in dark micaceous iron. The vertical end is formed by a glass lantern that shines far into the urban space at night. It will become the social ambassador of the new Tyrolean state museum and the site of many important events. The interior of the new state museum is characterized by sawn solid wood floors and heavy-duty polished hard concrete floors.
